American bases in Poland

I've seen so many Poles here say that they want US military bases in Poland because Trump will eventually leave office, but I don't think they realize that Russia took parts of Georgia when Bush was president and took Crimea when Obama was president. I know those countries aren't in NATO, but they were considered allies, and all the US did was sit back. Former French leader De Gaulle even questioned whether the United States would actually risk a nuclear war to defend Europe. The famous formulation was essentially, “Would you be ready to trade New York for Paris?”

Poland should invest in its own defense industry, and look to defend itself mostly on its own. I know it will still need allies, but becoming as independent as possible should be the goal.
