Is arguing for liberty a wasted effort?
I never thought I'd be the person to suggest such an idea, and I'm not saying anyone should stop. But I'd like to ask from a purely pragmatic perspective, taking human psychology into account.
Most people don't care about freedom. And I don't think that's just because people are raised in a statist world. I think a part of it is human nature. People want to be taken care of, look up to someone bigger for help, be given a script for life. This is actually the role that religion serves, and statism is just another kind of religion. It gives people a stable and predictable framework for life. Accepting freedom means accepting that there is no savior. It means taking responsibility over your own life and future and learning to get comfortable with uncertainty. That's scary for most people.
None of this is to say that we should give up on liberty since that wouldn't be helpful, but it does raise the question of if, to any degree, it's a wasted effort in the grand scheme of things to try to convince humanity to embrace freedom.
