Arturo Fuente created this cigar as a tribute to the heroes and victims of September 11 a day that remains far more than a date in American history. It represents thousands of lives lost, families forever changed, and extraordinary acts of courage from first responders and ordinary people who ran toward danger to help others.

We remember the innocent lives taken too soon, honor those who gave everything in the service of others, and remember the strength, compassion, and unity that emerged in the days that followed. More than two decades later, the responsibility to remember those sacrifices remains just as important.

That meaning is carried directly into this release. Arturo Fuente created the cigar in honor of the fallen heroes of September 11, with $11 from every box benefiting the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. The organization provides housing and other assistance to catastrophically injured veterans and first responders, Gold Star families, and families of fallen first responders. That charitable connection gives this cigar a significance that goes well beyond its rarity or collectability.

I was fortunate enough to smoke one, and knowing the story behind it made the experience feel different from the beginning.

I happened to be out of town when I lit it up, sitting by the water in Tampa on one of those rare Florida days when the weather cooperates completely. The temperature was cool enough to enjoy a cigar without fighting the humidity, and a light breeze moved through without disrupting the smoke. It was about as good a setting as I could have asked for.

My first impression was how beautiful the cigar looked. The wrapper was exceptionally clean, with virtually no visible inconsistencies, and the red, white, and blue OpusX band was handled tastefully. It was patriotic without feeling excessive or forced, which felt especially appropriate considering what the cigar represents.

On the dry pull, I immediately picked up sweetness and cedar two notes that usually make me optimistic about what is coming once the cigar is lit.

At 6 1/4 inches by a 54 ring gauge, this is a substantial cigar, and it gave me close to two hours of smoking time. What impressed me even more was the construction. Despite smoking it outdoors, I never had to correct the burn or relight it. The cigar stayed remarkably consistent from beginning to end.

Fuente has not disclosed the wrapper, binder, or filler tobaccos used in the blend, so there is unfortunately very little official information about its internal composition. From a flavor standpoint, though, it reminded me somewhat of the OpusX 25th Anniversary, only with a little more strength and intensity behind it.

The first third opened with a combination of natural sweetness, cedar, and a touch of spice. Nothing dominated the profile too aggressively. Instead, the flavors worked together in a balanced way, with the sweetness softening the wood and spice.

As I moved into the second third, the cigar began to develop more personality. The pepper increased slightly, but the biggest transition was a heavy wave of toasted coffee. That deeper roasted character paired extremely well with the remaining sweetness and became one of my favorite portions of the cigar.

By the final third, everything seemed to turn up another level. The coffee became darker and fuller, the sweet cedar intensified, and the spice gained more presence without overwhelming the rest of the profile. Instead of falling apart toward the end, the cigar became richer. I smoked it until there was almost nothing left to hold.

Taken strictly as a cigar, it was excellent: beautifully constructed, complex, flavorful, and consistent from beginning to end. But reviewing this particular release only in terms of flavor and construction would miss the most important part of what it represents.

There are cigars we remember because of an exceptional blend, a rare release, or a memorable setting. This one carries something heavier with it. It exists as a tribute to people whose lives were taken, to families who still carry that loss, and to the first responders and everyday Americans whose courage on September 11 showed the very best of humanity during one of its darkest moments.

Smoking it by the water on a quiet afternoon gave me plenty of time to think about that. The cigar eventually ended, but the reason it was created deserves to remain with us.

May we continue to remember the lives lost, honor those who ran toward danger when others were trying to escape it, support the families who continue to live with those sacrifices, and never allow the passage of time to lessen the significance of September 11.

We will never forget.
