Is joining a course now a bad idea?

Just under three weeks in and considering dropping a course but I'd like to replace it with something else so I don't have gaps in my schedule. A course that I want has room but would I be super far behind if I registered in the class now?

(Also do you just register and show up? Or is there something else you have to do when you start this late?)
