Would you move somewhere you don't want to live for the speciality you want?
I'm an RN with 1.5 years of med-surg/tele and ED step-down experience, hoping to eventually pursue CRNA.
I feel stuck in my current position and have applied to CVICUs all over the country. I've had numerous interviews and even turned down a couple of offers that weren't the right fit.
Now I have an opportunity to work in a CVICU at a Level 1 trauma center and Magnet hospital. The catch? I'd have to move back to a right-to-work state with low nursing pay, limited career growth, and a culture that doesn't align with my values.
I'd also be moving within a few hours of my stepfamily and extended family, whom I have no desire to reconnect with, let alone spend every holiday with.
Professionally, this could be exactly what I need. I do have connections and great friends that live there. There is also a cycling community I see myself being part of. Overall, it feels like moving backward but maybe a step back for a step forward?
So my question is....would you suck it up for 1–2 years to get the ICU experience and move on, or keep searching for an opportunity somewhere you'd actually want to live? I feel like it would take a lifetime to find the perfect opportunity and think this could be a great stepping stone for my future career.
