Every ingredient on this recipe page is an Amazon grocery item under $5 with free Prime shipping, and one button puts the whole recipe in your cart. Also: ten-can crockpot chili that feeds you for a week.

I built DollarSquares because I was tired of two things: recipe sites that make you scroll past someone's grandmother to reach the can opener, and "budget meals" that assume you already own a stocked pantry. So the rule on the site is simple. Every item is an Amazon grocery product that was under $5 and shipped free with Prime when we last checked, sorted into $1, $2, $3 and $5 shelves, about a thousand of them, mostly the house brands (Amazon Grocery, Amazon Saver, 365) and the boring reliable stuff: canned beans and tomatoes, rice, pasta, taco shells, oats, syrup, spices. Prices on Amazon drift daily, so the shelf gets re-checked and anything that jumped gets pulled.

The recipes are the useful part: dollarsquares.com/recipes

Each one is the list, the steps, and one button that sends every ingredient to your Amazon cart at Amazon's current price. Sorted into Mexican, American, Cajun, Asian, Breakfast, School lunch, and a SNAP EBT page where every ingredient carried Amazon's SNAP badge. Some are pantry-only (taco soup, red beans and rice, tuna noodle); some assume you grab the chicken or beef at any store and the rest arrives in a box.

Here's the one the whole site was built around, because it's the best dollars-to-dinners ratio on it:

Dump-and-walk-away vegetarian chili (serves 6 to 8, or one person for most of a week; 5 minutes of you, 6 hours of the crockpot)

What to buy, all from the shelf and all under a dollar or so a can: kidney beans, black beans, pinto beans, fire-roasted diced tomatoes, crushed tomatoes, a can of corn, a small can of mild green chiles, a chili seasoning packet, a carton of vegetable broth, and a jar of minced onion. Ten things. Nobody chops anything.

What to do:

  1. Open every can. Drain the beans and the corn. Do not drain the tomatoes or the chiles.
  2. Everything into the crockpot. Add the seasoning packet, a tablespoon of minced onion, and about a cup of the broth. Stir once.
  3. Lid on. Low for 6 hours, or high for 3. Walk away.
  4. Taste it. Salt it. That is the recipe.

If you want to show off: a spoon of salsa on top, tortilla strips for crunch, jalapeños if you like it hot, or crushed cheese crackers, which is the classic move. Every one of the ten carried Amazon's SNAP badge when we checked, it's about $10 for the pot, and it freezes.

Happy to take requests for recipes or items in the comments. If something shows as "off the shelf" when you look, that's Amazon moving the price, not me; check back in a day.

Full disclosure: as an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases and Prime sign-ups. It costs you nothing extra; prices are whatever Amazon shows at checkout.
