Is this bro code or something?
I am 30 F so this guy hit me up on WhatsApp after ages, wondering why I'd taken down my profile picture. Truth is, I'd actually tweaked my privacy settings just to hide my DP from him.
Why, you ask?
Well, we used to go to the same library, and he'd sit next to me every single day. We started chatting, and honestly, I thought he was super naive and childlike. He'd spill all the tea about his crushes and stuff, saying I was like a friend to him. But gradually, I started feeling like he was getting a bit too friendly, sharing way too much about his life. So, I switched seats and kept my distance. Eventually, he left the library, but we stayed connected on Instagram.
About a year ago, he slid into my Insta DMs and confessed he wanted to date me. I politely turned him down, explaining I was already in a LDR and not interested. He seemed to accept it back then, and we moved on. I unfollowed him on Instagram and haven't spoken to him since.
But today, he messaged me on WhatsApp. I honestly don't remember giving him my number – he's friends with that guy from the library, so he probably got it from him. He asked me out for coffee, saying he'd just bought a new car and wanted me to come for a ride. He suggested we could grab coffee and then just hang out in his car and chat. At first, I said no, that I wasn't comfortable. Then he started shaming me, saying I call myself liberal but I'm acting like some small-town conservative girl, and that we're "just friends."
I eventually said okay, we could go, but I'd be way more comfortable in an actual cafe than in a car. To that, he sarcastically shot back, "Don't overthink everything, I'm just asking for a coffee, not to marry you."
I got a little offended, so I lied and said, "Look, I'll have to get permission from my fiancé" ( I don't have a fiancé) "and I can only go if he's comfortable." His immediate reply was, "Oh, you got engaged? My bad, I get it. No guy would let his girlfriend go out for coffee with another guy."
Now I'm totally confused. How did he instantly figure out why I was saying no? When I was declining without making up the engagement story, I was "conservative and small-minded" for doubting his pure "only friends" intentions. But now that I have an imaginary fiancé, he suddenly says no one would allow that?
>!TLDR: !<
A guy who was interested in dating me randomly approached for a coffee and very reluctant to accept my decline until he knew I was engaged (i had faked it). What's the thinking behind this?
I used AI for better framing of my text otherwise it was getting too long.
