Considering a career change to the NHS GMTS (General Management) – seeking advice and experiences
Hello everyone,
I am currently in my late 20s and strongly considering a career change. I am looking into the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme (GMTS), specifically the General Management stream, and would be incredibly grateful for any insights from those who have completed or are currently on the programme.
While the prospect of the scheme is highly appealing—particularly the structured pathway and the funded postgraduate qualifications—I am keen to get a realistic picture of what the experience is actually like on the ground.
I have a few specific questions, but any general advice would also be hugely appreciated:
Experience as a career changer: How well suited is the scheme for someone entering with prior professional experience rather than straight out of university? Is there a good mix of ages and professional backgrounds within the cohorts?
The day-to-day reality: What does a typical General Management placement actually look like? I am curious about the level of responsibility you are given early on and how you found the balance between full-time work and studying for the academic components.
Placements and support: How much input do you have regarding the location and focus of your placements? Furthermore, how robust is the support network, mentoring, and coaching provided by the scheme?
Post-scheme prospects: How smooth is the transition upon completing the two-year scheme? Is stepping into a Band 7 or equivalent leadership role generally achievable, or does it depend heavily on the specific trust you are placed in?
Thank you in advance for your time and any advice you can share. It is a significant career pivot for me, so hearing firsthand experiences would be invaluable.
