Reserve/Auxiliary Deputy in Illinois
Hey everyone! I’m currently an Auxiliary Deputy with a local Sheriff’s Department who uses me as an armed tactical medic. I work full-time for the ambulance service for this county. This county brought me on as an Auxiliary Deputy and sent me to the 40 hour handgun course so I could carry on search warrants, active shooter situations, etc. basically only when I’m doing tactical medic operations. Fast forward, I’m still functioning as a tactical medic for this county and am still working full-time EMS for this county but have been sworn in as a Reserve Deputy for another county that I work part-time EMS in. This Sheriff’s Department allows the Reserve Deputies to be armed as well as long the proper requirements are meant.
My question is, I don’t live/reside in either county and it was brought to my attention today that Auxiliary/Reserve Deputies are supposed to live in/reside in the county they serve as such under Illinois State Statute. How’d both Sheriff’s allow me/swear me in, etc. as both if I don’t live in the counties? Am I missing something? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
