Mini-max vs cargo for bikepacking

I’m torn between an Omnium Mini-Max and a Cargo. I’d mainly use it as an everyday bike for shopping, but I’d also like to ride it without cargo on the rack. In the future, I’d like to be able to carry a small dog/ kids as well.

I’m also inspired by the many bikepacking setups I’ve seen online, and I’d love to use it for longer trips. I’m considering bikepacking in Italy, England or Scotland, so there may be some gravel and off road sections along the way.

At the shop, they recommended the Omnium Cargo for bikepacking. However, I’ve read in various posts that the Mini-Max is easier to take on trains, which would definitely be an advantage for me since I live in Belgium. On the other hand, I’ve also read that the Mini-Max can feel wobbly and is less stable on longer rides.

A few questions for those with experience with these bikes:

  • What’s your experience with the Mini-Max and the Cargo? Which one would you choose for bikepacking, and why?
  • How practical is it to take the Omnium Cargo on trains? Does the extra 20 cm in length actually make a noticeable difference?
  • Unfortunately, I can’t test either model or size. I’m 185 cm tall, so I’m right on the border between an M and an L. Based on your experience, which size would you recommend?
  • Does anyone have any experience of transporting these bikes on a bike rack (not on the roof)?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!
