Advise needed: Mortgage-free at 30-35 on a £60k income — how to start building for the future?
Hi all,
Hoping you’re all well and can hopefully impart some wisdom on how best to set ourselves up for the future (myself, my wife, and our young son).
We find ourselves in a very fortunate position that we don't take for granted, but we honestly feel completely out of our depth on what to do next. We aren't naturally financially driven, we don't currently invest (aside from a Junior ISA for our son), and we don’t really know which path we should be looking into.
Here is a quick snapshot of our current standing:
Property & Assets
- House Value: ~£400,000
- Mortgage: £0 (Mortgage-free). We managed this thanks to a large chunk from my wife's inheritance, our own savings, and a small loan from my MIL.
Debts & Commitments
- MIL Loan: Cleared completely by March 2027 (£250 a month)
- Car PCP: 22 months remaining until I VT the car (£280 a month)
- Solar Panel Loan: ~£6,000 left to pay off. (£175 a month)
- Credit Cards: Sub-£2,000 balance, but all sit on 0% interest offers and are set to be cleared well before the 0% windows expire.
Income
- Household Income: ~£62,000 combined.
Where We Need Help
We are in our early-to-mid 30s. Because our biggest expense (housing) is ticked off, we feel like we have a massive head start compared to many our age, but we have no idea how to leverage it.
- Should we start looking at ISAs (Stocks & Shares ISAs)?
- How should we balance clearing our remaining low-cost debts (solar/car) versus putting money to work?
- What are the foundational steps for beginners who want to build long-term security without needing a finance degree?
Any advice, recommended reading, or step-by-step guidance on how you would structure our next 5–10 years would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance!
