Hello. I live in Korea, and I am an aspiring novelist, a webtoon background modeler, and also a programmer.

I have been very interested in writerDecks and wanted to buy one, but honestly it is quite difficult in Korea.

Pomera does not support Korean, and BYOK is similar.

Basically, the only dedicated writing device that supports Korean is Freewrite, but buying one in Korea becomes quite expensive.

In dollars, I think the feeling is around **$699–999**.

It becomes about **1.5 times the normal price**.

Also, writerDeck itself is still a very unfamiliar thing in Korea, so it is not easy to find proper parts to build one myself.

The realistic choices are an iPad, Android tablet, or just a laptop.

But they did not really feel like a machine only for writing.

Because you still need to use a mouse, trackpad, or touch the screen.

So I made a program.

At first I wanted something that could completely replace the OS and turn the device into a writing machine, but as you probably know, doing something like that on a Mac or iPad is difficult.

So in the end, it became an app.

Instead, I built it around one idea:

**touch the mouse and trackpad as little as possible.**

That is how I made versions for Mac and iPad.

**It is not a deck, but I tried to make it something you can use as much like a deck as possible.**

The name is **draftwriter Run!**

The app itself is quite simple.

Like some other writing programs, the line you are currently writing stays clear, and the surrounding text gradually fades.

But I added restrictions.

In Normal mode, you can use the keyboard normally, but you cannot click around the body text with the mouse to move the cursor.

The arrow keys are the center of navigation.

And there is **Run! mode**.

This is closer to what I originally wanted.

In Run! mode, you cannot use the arrow keys to go back to previous sentences, and you cannot select text you already wrote or go back with Undo.

If you really want to go back, you have to delete.

The cursor also changes into a small horizontal pointer under the text, **waiting for the next sentence.**

Usually writing apps show word count or how long you have been writing at the bottom.

With Run!, I wanted to look at time a little differently.

Instead of showing how long you have been writing, it shows **how long you have stopped writing.**

You can call it stopped time, but in the end, maybe that pause was also necessary for the first draft to exist.

The Mac version is **free on the Mac App Store.**

The iPad version will not be free.

It is still in development, but it will be a paid app. Probably not very expensive though.

Because after all, what it does is just help you write a first draft.

But for the iPad version, I am trying to make it **trackpad-less and touch-less.**

Basically, I am designing it so that every important action can be done with the keyboard.

If you have tried writing a first draft on an iPad, maybe you know what I mean.

The moment you touch the screen, sometimes you start doing something else.

More than anything, this is a tool I made because I wanted to use it myself.

But I was also curious if the idea of a first draft — **not going backward, but continuing forward** — could make sense to other people too.

Of course, in the end this is still a promotion post.

But just like it feels strange to write something and never let anyone read it, I thought it also feels strange to make a program and only use it by myself.

The Mac version is available on the App Store:

And please understand if some of my English sounds awkward. I am Korean, and English is not my first language.

I wanted a writerDeck, but getting one in Korea wasn't easy — so I made something for my Mac&IPad instead
