The "Ammaputhappe” song from Athiradi deserved better, and I think the screenplay is partly to blame

Opinion

does anyone else feel the song Ammaputhappe deserved a lot more attention?

This is actually such an important song in the film because it's where Tovino's character finally gets his payoff. Throughout the movie, we know how badly he wants to sing despite... well, not exactly being able to sing. 😄

And I think that's also where the song gets shortchanged.

Because the whole premise is that he isn't a good singer, the film treats the moment partly as a joke. Even the recorded version seems to carry that flavour. Vineeth Sreenivasan's portion, especially the “Pinnaale aaro undaayirunne…” section, sounds so unusual compared to the kind of melodies we normally associate with him.

Maybe that was completely intentional and suited the character. But purely as a song, I just can't get into that portion. I usually skip straight past it.

The chorus, though, is absolutely beautiful - "Kurunnu naavo pozhi paranje..."

That's the part I keep going back to and looping.

It makes me wonder what if they had retained the idea that Tovino's character is the one singing it, but still given us a better beautifully sung full version of the same song?

I genuinely think Ammaputhappe could have had a much bigger life outside the movie.
