AITAH for not having speeches at my wedding, even though my dad says it hurts him that I took that opportunity away from him?

My fiancé and I are getting married soon, and we’ve made a very intentional decision from the day we got engaged that we don’t want a traditional wedding.
We aren’t doing a lot of the traditional elements, and we’ve been planning the day around what feels authentic to us rather than following the usual wedding format. This isn’t something we decided at the last minute…we’ve felt this way from the beginning.

One of the things we decided is that we don’t want speeches at the wedding.

My dad recently told me that he feels hurt by this decision. He explained that 99% of the people attending don’t know that he’s my father, and that giving a speech would be a way for him to introduce himself to everyone and show a lighter, fun side of himself. He also feels that because we decided not to have a private ceremony he now feels like “just another invited guest.”

He told me that it hurts him that I’ve “taken these honors away” from him and that the opportunity to give a speech could also be given to my mom. He said, essentially, that he and my mom are my parents, they’re the reason I’m here, and they should be acknowledged accordingly. He asked me to reconsider and said that a few minutes is all he’s asking for. He even has the speech planned, although he hasn’t written it yet.

For additional context, my relationship with my father has never been particularly close or easy. We’ve had our issues over the years, and there has always been some emotional distance between us. So I think that also affects how I’m experiencing this situation. I know that this speech may represent something meaningful to him, but I also don’t want to feel pressured into giving him a role in my wedding that I don’t actually want him to have.
I completely understand why the speech has meaning to him. I’m not trying to minimize his role as my father, and I love and appreciate my parents. I also understand that from his perspective, this may feel like I’m taking away an important moment from him.

But from my perspective, this isn’t about my parents or how much I value them. It’s about the kind of wedding my fiancé and I have deliberately chosen to have.

We don’t want a traditional wedding, and that has been our decision since the day we got engaged. Speeches are one of those traditional elements that we simply don’t want. We don’t want to spend the day incorporating traditions just because they’re expected of us.

That said, I don’t want my dad to feel excluded. We’re actually planning a get-together Friday night for the guests who are staying at the hotel. I’m waiting for the hotel to confirm a conference room, and although my dad isn’t staying at the hotel, I told him he is absolutely welcome to join us. I also told him that if he still wants to give his speech, he can share it with everyone Friday night. He declined.

So there is an opportunity for him to give the speech and for everyone to hear it. I just don’t want it to be part of the wedding itself.

I’m struggling because I can see why this is emotionally important to him, but I also feel like my fiancé and I should be able to decide what our wedding looks and feels like without feeling guilty for not including traditional elements.

AITAH for sticking to our decision and not having speeches at the wedding, even though my dad feels that I’m taking away an important honor from him?
