



We want to get ahead of this before someone has to ask: the trailer leans hard into the checkpoint mechanic and barely touches what's actually going on with Franz and his family. That was on purpose, and it wasn't an easy call.

This sub already had a real thread going about whether a game can make you competent at the mechanics of persecution without that competence feeling good. We think about that same tension every time we cut a trailer.

Here's the actual reasoning.

Trailers, especially the first ten seconds, get judged as gameplay before anyone cares about story. That's true for any game, but it's a real problem for us specifically, because the story is the part we care most about getting right, and the fastest way to get it wrong is to explain it badly in eleven seconds of footage.

So we made a call: show the mechanic first, all the way through. Documents, stamps, the rules getting tighter shift over shift. No lore card, no narrator, nothing explaining who Franz is before you've seen what he actually does. If you've played Papers, Please, that part reads immediately.

But we didn't want to leave the weight out either, so instead of a text card, we used one moment: two soldiers walk a woman with a Star of David on her coat past the desk, and one of them says something short about being fortunate to be born with the right blood. That's it. One line, inside a gameplay scene, no music swell, no cutaway. It's the only place in the whole trailer where the game tells you what it actually thinks about the system Franz works inside.

Whether that's enough, or whether it should've been more, is a fair thing to push back on. We don't think a trailer is the place to fully answer it. The demo is closer to an answer than the trailer will ever be.
