What is the cost of insurance for my downstream oil and gas operation?

Adjuster killed my pump claim in June over two words I had never noticed in eleven years of reading the policy. Mechanical breakdown.

We are a jobber. One bulk plant, three shop built tanks, a blend rack where we splash blend biodiesel through the winter, two tank trucks and two company operated stores. A little under 300,000 gallons a month. My father ran it before me and the agent came with the building.

The transfer pump on the rack seized and took the seal and the meter skid with it. First thing in eleven years that cleared our deductible, which is the only reason I bothered filing. We ran off the terminal rack for a week and ate the freight.

Then the renewal questionnaire showed up a couple of months back. The underwriter wants inspection dates on all three tanks. Those are shop built so I read that as SP001, he wrote 653. Same email asks whether we carry machinery breakdown, and whether our business interruption is written on revenue or on margin. Nobody at the agency could answer the margin one. Our agent is a personal lines guy who inherited us when my father retired.

So what is a setup like this supposed to cost. I have no benchmark at all and I am not asking my own agent to invent one for me. If you run a plant and a rack with a couple of company operated sites behind it, what are you actually paying line by line, and which line turned out to be the one that hurt.

And is anyone buying this as one package, or is it property and liability and environmental and the machinery piece off four different carriers, stapled together every renewal.

If you have been through this in the last year, tell me what your underwriter asked for that ours has not. I do not think our agent knows what is in this policy and I am starting to think I do not either.
