Trying to find a low interest loan to pay off debt
A few years ago back I had to go on sick leave from work which reduced my income. At the time I had approached TD for a loan to cover my credit card debt but because they would not use my real numbers they determined I couldn’t afford a loan. I had been with them as a bank for nearly 20 years at this point.
The person I spoke with insisted on doubling my rent cost and told me they had minimum amounts they had to use. Ok.
At that time I was paying close to $800 a month just on credit and the loan I wanted would have cost $250 per month. I’m not a math genius but I’m pretty sure that would have put me ahead financially by quite a bit. They refused me in the end.
Just prior to Covid I went 6 months without income while I waited for my benefits company to process updated medical. Again TD refused to help me and despite many repeated calls to my two biggest creditors (who flat out refused to let me set up any kind of payment arrangement despite me explaining I would pay them a lump sum once I received my back pay.) Needless to say those cards went to collections and killed my credit.
When I finally received money from my benefits company they gave me 10,000 in back pay. At the same time I received a bill for 7000 from OW (it was the only way I managed to pay rent for those 6 months. Rent. Not even food) AND out of the blue a bill for 3000 from my place of work telling me I needed to start making payments towards my benefit amounts. (I had been told it would be covered but apparently the HR rep that told me that was wrong as only part of my benefits would be covered.) At the time I ended up being able to pay my regular bills, catch up my 3 remaining cards and pay off OW. I started making payments towards my work but they were a few hundred dollars every couple months.
When my benefits ran out in February I was advised by my benefits company that I would no longer have benefits but could contact them for private insurance if I choose. I am still on sick leave from work and still considered an employee but have had to transition to ODSP as I have been unable to return to work yet.
I’ve been trying to pay down my credit cards (including an additional $2000 dollar balance TD approved only a year after I tried to apply for a loan with them - obviously they were willing to give me some money as long as they could charge a much higher interest rate.)
Last week work sent a letter to me that shocked me. I had believed my benefits amounts were sitting around 1800-2000 owing and it wasn’t a major stress factor because I would be able to start making bigger payments again starting in January. To my surprise the amount was over $4000 and climbing because despite what my benefits company said and my previous HR contact had told me - I was in fact still getting benefits and still being charged monthly.
We’ve had a rough year and a few emergencies and I was handling the fact that I owed $4000 but was working on a plan to pay it off as I could manage (harder now with the price off food but I was trying). Right now I am feeling hopeless in the face of $8000 on debt and not sure what to do. I already know that TD isn’t going to give me a loan. I actually get $200 more a month now but according to them I needed to make 1100 more a month for them to approve a loan with a $250 monthly payment.
I’ve tried looking at some alternatives but the interest is often just as high or higher than my credit card interest. I’m wondering if anyone can recommend an affordable place to apply for a small loan? (If it matters I live in Ontario).
If you read this far, thank you
