Hey, welcome to my short analysis on Parrot's newest video: Escaping the Minecraft Underworld.
As with all critiques please remember that I do not mean to offend anyone, this was written in good will only and I love Unstable SMP. I threw this all together fairly quickly so do expect some typos and grammatical errors. If I missed any details feel free to let me know.
With that out of the way, have fun reading.
Parrot arrives at in the underworld with 1000 players, fresh out of prison they have barely any resources. So of course Parrot immediately throws all suspense of disbelief out of the window by claiming that they travelled for 12 hours straight before reaching TheOathBinder's tower.
Alright so since this video heavily plays into the lack of food and means to acquire it I would like to make everyone aware of some base rules to make the discussion a little easier in the long run.
We can see them walking instead of sprinting to preserve hunger.
At Minecrafts normal walking speed of 4,317 blocks per second this would amount to roughly 185.000 blocks distance within the 12 hours that they walked.
Minecraft hunger depletes in rates of exhaustion. 4.00 exhaustion is equal to half a hunger bar. Walking itself doesn't cost anything but jumping takes 0.05 exhaustion. Now with the terrain we are seeing in the video I will give traversal a very generous estimate of one jump every 10 seconds. (This number will later be proven right.) This means that that within one minute we can expect the players to loose 0.30 exhaustion or one saturation per 13.33 minutes.
At twelve hours that would be 54 saturation.
At the tower we can see Parrot hold exactly 21 cooked cod in his inventory. This is extremely funny because that is the same amount he was holding when he left the prison and entered the underworld.
Now let's be real, this is an insane detail to pay attention to, but it is still something I wanted to mention since I wasted way to much time on this.
Arriving at the tower the players are met with a giant field of wheat. This would be nice if there was also a crafting table nearby—but there wasn't.
Even though Parrot draws their attention to a very obvious trap he can't stop the players from stepping inside anyways. This makes sense, the average player in this situation will not make the rational decision, they will pay the price for it.
It is painfully obvious from the start, that Parrot will not get everyone out of the overworld, it is tragic though realistic.
TheOathBringer has no reasons to let these players survive, he want's the Underworld to remain a secret and therefore can not let a thousand players simply leave. He does tell Parrot that there aren't many players who do what he does. TheOathBringer has taken quite a liking to Parrot, and so he will give him an ultimatum.
This is an insultingly cheap excuse to not kill Parrot right away. This player knows Parrot, probably through contact with the scholars. Through letting him escape I was questioning his intentions of keeping the secret of the underworld.
Of course killing Parrot would mean the end of his POV, so of course that can't happen. But the reason TheOathBringer gives is that he has taken quite a liking to Parrot, and I can't help but feel that Parrot didn't want to come up with an interesting reason and simply wanted to keep the story moving forward.
So Parrot escapes and fails to rescue half his people and we move on.
But where are we going? TheOathBringer claims that there is a portal at the spawn of the underworld, which might be an interesting lore drop. "Spawn" implies that some people simply start unstable in the underworld. We don't know though and somehow I doubt that theory.
Anyways, F3 doesn't work so where is spawn? I don't know, but Parrot does... somehow.
This is not like in Flames video, where the vague description "Up ahead" could actually lead somewhere, Parrot simply has to guess where to go and of course he guesses correctly.
We arrive at a big ravine, conveniently facing a massive entrance into the mountain range and Parrot just know that it is THE way forward. They need to pass the ravine and there is no other option.
He sends two people out to each explore into one direction, hoping to find a way across. During this time Parrot will stand at the edge menacingly, doing absolutely nothing to help. I am aware that there is not much he could have done, yet sending two people to their potential death and just hoping that they return in a reasonable time feels kind of awkward. Maybe this is unreasonable, feel free to disregard this criticism.
But while we wait, lets take a moment to appreciate the beauty of the underworld. I really love the block pallet that has been used, it feels dead, it feels dark it captures the vibe of something that would be called "the Underworld" perfectly. It is vast and mostly empty and yet the few building that we do find are gorgeous while maintaining that same vibe.
A player returns, they have travelled 10 thousand blocks, which should take roughly 77 minutes or 5.7 saturation.
After the second one returns the players are lead to a point that might be crossable with a big jump. Parrot places a boat to gain some distance over the edge. The terrain would be perfect to stack a second boat atop the first one to gain even more distance but *Unstables smartest player* didn't think of that.
The jump needs the players to sprint in order to make it. He asks the crowd if they have enough saturation an some players visibly shake their head at him... He ignores them and makes the jump...
For someone who claims that he want's to save everyone he seems to not care about them at all, this makes his narrative inconsistent and his character falls apart, or maybe it repaints him as someone else, someone who only pretends to care so people keep following him, so he can use them to his benefit. This would be in line with season one Parrot, who got upset that no one wanted to throw away their lives to protect his against Clown.
Parrot's writing however doesn't seem like it want's to lean into this, quite interesting, character concept, which makes this entire scene feel incredibly off.
As expected many people die trying to jump across the ravine and his group splits in half again after someone speaks up against Parrot's disregarding of the starving.
Trondium puts all blame on Parrot, claiming that he got everyone killed at the castle. "I knew that that wall was gonna pop up, that's why I told you not to cross it."
Trondium hears this, completely ignores his point and goes on to talk about how people are starving. This infuriates me, it is also not the first time people act this way in Parrot's videos, needlessly blaming him for all suffering, even though he is the only person who actually tries to put in the effort. It is pretty realistic, people are stupid, but this is a trope I can very much live without—oh yes, it is also another trope to artificially create drama and conflict. It is effortless to write since all you need is one dumb person without a point but with an ego.
Parrot does holds his classic "Do what you think is right," speech and the group leaves in another direction—we will never see them again.
We enter the maze and there are some inconsistencies about the food again, but the real interesting thing happens when two people get send out to scout ahead again, after eight hours one of them returns, the other one is left behind. This is where my estimate of ten seconds per jump is proven right. Parrot is at full saturation before starting the travel. After three hours they arrive, this should have lost 6.5 hunger bars. Parrot has lost 6 in the video. This is most likely just a fluke but since the numbers add up I'm taking my estimate at close enough.
The crew arrives at a village, luckily sweet berry bushes offer some food. kamp3 talks to Parrot about his concern with the village and one day later the group continues their travel... Well, they don't.
Parrot needs to shave off players and since no one died, we have another moment of people deciding to go another path... by staying in the village. I have some things to say about this:
Firstly: Are players on unstable allergic to fun? What are you trying to achieve by staying in a village where you can't mine blocks, can't place blocks, and are at risk of hostile players showing up. At this point just leave the server. You sat in queue for a month (Numbers from Wemmbu's video), sat in Clowns prison for who know how long and now you stay in a village where you can't play the game. These people treat Unstable as their real lives. This sparks a whole different discussion of what Unstable SMP actually tries to be. I'm not gonna talk about this now because this would easily add many thousands of words to this analysis. I will make a separate post at some point though.
Secondly: Parrot is a moralizer and it hurts to watch. He has this habit of seeing people who are suffering and asking them if it is really okay for them to live like this. This is a rhetorical question, obviously their not, yet they don't have much of a choice if with the situations they are in. We see this in Clown's prison, but also many times before that I don't care to list. Parrot comes into these places of suffering, establishes himself as the main character by holding a pointless speech about how these people should act to get out of their misery and then goes on to become the hero.
"Are you really all fine with this? Will you really sit here until the day you die and do nothing?"
This is basically putting blame on the victim. It could be yet another interesting character flaw that Parrot could learn to overcome. But again, with Parrot's writing there is nothing to indicate that he actually want's to engage with this piece of his character. Parrot is narcissist and I'm tired of pretending he is not.
But what does that have to do with the village people?
Simple: When Parrot enters the prison he acts like the saviour, ready to throw away his own life to save everyone. These people are hard to convince though through persistence and hard work he manages to get them on his side. So when they then **decide** to go from one prison to another, he doesn't even bat an eye.
hey*b1o: "We need to keep going."*
*Parrot: "Okay—everyone here has sweet berries right?"*
*This hurts to watch. He so blatantly disregards his main character trait and leaves these people behind without even talking to them.*
*At the ravine he did not have a choice, these people couldn't jump no matter what, but here he could easily go back and at least try to talk.*
*But alas, the story must go on.*
*The continue to travel through the maze and at some point Parrot says: "We were here about two hours ago" this is the place where they arrived ten minutes after the village, yet Parrot claims that they had travelled for nine hours, so I assume he is calculating the time since entering the maze initially, not including the waiting, which would be three plus two known times. This leaves us with four hours of unknown travel time which we can only assume to be the very start of the maze. Parrot had no food upon arriving at the maze, which makes the number of nine hours impossible... So on top of everything Parrot can't even keep track of his own travel time. I don't even know how a mistake like this could happen, he must have come up with these number in the moment. It's not important but it does add to the weird writing.*
*I'm gonna speed up for a while*
*The group then arrives at an underground tunnel, we get some warden action, one person closes a one way door, killing half of the group \_again* Parrot uses his ultra instinct to see a tripwire on the stair, someone manages to not click on a boat to skip over it and lava comes flooding down. Parrot climbs up, trying to place a boat on the other side of the lava wall go get through, yet he throws the boat right in. But he wouldn't admit to doing anything wrong so he tries to claim that the boat simply burned upon placing.
Through a hidden crack in the wall the group finds another way through and eventually they find a snowy forest.
This is such a beautiful scene, in the underworld forest, you can see projections of your dead friends. This leads some players to jump up in joy, burying them beneath powdered snow. Parrot sees Wifies and many other friends he has lost and we are reminded of all the suffering he has gone through. This is such a simple thing, yet it is really creative and deeply effective. The players reacting by running right into a trap makes perfect sense and shows their emotions without any words. This is show-don't-tell at it's finest and I love this segment.
Here we also get an interesting bit, since Parrot sees Leow0ok in the distance. His reaction leads me to believe that Parrot did not know about his death, making this a really strong reveal for him. This scene is where Parrot actually shows his strengths with storytelling. This is dark and sad and not many words are needed to explain the situation. It all makes sense and paints the Underworld in another light without making it seem unbelievable. More stuff like this Parrot!
Well, all my joy is coming crumbling down in the next scene. Arriving at a lava lake there is one player with a boat, he can only let three people pass. But that is fine, he explains that the group could walk around the lake. It is 40 thousand blocks.
At this point they have already walked for a minimum of 340 thousand blocks. These 40k should be a cakewalk. But no, Parrot needs to shave off more players and so he kills the player, who had full armour but chose to not wear it btw, and they go on the boat.
On the other side they realise that they are on an island and there are exactly three striders to get off the island again. How unfortunate. kamp3 decided that he want's to leave and so he attacks Parrot, who is still holding the saddles. But Parrot runs away, leading kamp3 to guard the striders until Parrot returned.
This is actually quite interesting, kamp3 voiced some of his concern throughout this video, already foreshadowing his betrayal.
Since Parrot didn't pick up most of the ferry guys armour kamp3 took the opportunity to save himself using this armour.
But Parrot has the gods of convenient writing and perfect luck on his side. So since he managed to craft a suspicious stew with the poison effect at the village (which is really convenient writing.) He could send one of the players to their death to feed kamp3 the poison. All this comes together quite nicely. It is a sacrifice that made sense.
Eating the poison, kamp3 is weak and gets killed by Parrot, but there are still too many striders. So one more person needs to be left behind.
como\_squad makes the decision that he should be the one, since he is close to starving and didn't except to come this far anyways. This entire sequence of sacrifices was actually quite nice, every death happened with a reason, out of desperation.
The last three players take the striders, cross the lava sea and eventually arrive at the exit portal, which conveniently needs two players to hold it open. While this was clearly another means for Parrot to get rid of the last few players, it was quite epic, seeing them standing on the two pillars, the massive door opening and a lone portal sitting menacingly across the room.
These players sacrifice themselves so Parrot can get back to the overworld and save them from Clowns invasion. At some point these two players will find their way out of the underworld and see Parrot again.
But Parrot is allergic to long term buildups and needs these two players to die, so that we may never feel happiness when watching his videos.
You know, these were probably the most disappointing deaths in the video. The payoff of seeing these two reunite with Parrot many videos in the future would be simply beautiful and I don't get why Parrot can't just let them survive, he does everything for the short term emotions and completely forgets about what made Wifies' and Dean's deaths so impactfull.
TheOathBinder turns up and takes their lives. Parrot leaves the underworld and finds himself in the farlands where he immediately gets captured by the NULL and lead to Spokes end Kingdom.
Spoke out here saving the end of this video frfr.
Overall this was just another average Parrot video. It was mostly predictable and once again seems like Parrot just trying to paint himself as the good guy. There were some good scenes here but overall it is a video that I will quite forget about again. I loved seeing the underworld and it's biomes and the snowy forest will stick with me for a while.
I hope this analysis was entertaining enough and taught you a little bit about writing.
Obligatory: "I love Unstable and this critique is written in good will only."
Thanks for reading, feel free to debate me in the comments, I'm sure there are some details I have missed.

Words: 3061 (Omg I'm so sorry xD)
