How do you guys deal with the endless piling up of "good" clothes, packaging trash, and kids' stuff? Need a sanity check!
Hey everyone,
Lately, I feel like my flat is slowly being overtaken by stuff, and no matter how much I try to organize, the clutter just keeps growing. I have a very frugal mindset, so my instinct is to use every single product till the absolute end of its life. Because of this, throwing anything away feels like wasteful criminal activity—even when my space is suffering!
I’d love to know how Indian households here handle these specific clutter traps without feeling guilty:
1. The "Too Good to Throw Away" Clothes
My wardrobe is overflowing with old clothes. They aren’t ruined, torn, or stained—just a bit faded, maybe a little out of style, or not fitting like they used to. Some of these old clothes actually still fit me fine, but because I rarely wear them, they just sit there taking up prime wardrobe space. Because they still have plenty of "life" left in them, my brain refuses to part with them.
How do you decide when to part with clothes that still fit or are usable, but rarely get worn?
Do you donate to local NGOs (like Goonj), pass them to house help, give them to a local kabadiwala, or turn them into pocha (cleaning rags)? Where do you draw the line?
2. E-Commerce Packaging (Blinkit, Amazon, Flipkart)
Every time a parcel arrives, I’m left with cardboard boxes, courier bags, thermocol, and layers of bubble wrap.
Because I hate wasting anything, I always tell myself, "Maybe I’ll need this box if I have to return something, store items, or send a parcel via Dunzo/Porter." Before I know it, my utility area or storage corner looks like a mini warehouse.
Do you call the local scrap dealer / raddiwalas immediately, or keep boxes around "just in case"?
If you keep them, what’s your timeline before clearing them out?
3. Large Appliance Boxes
When buying larger appliances (TVs, washing machines, fridges, microwaves), those massive cardboard boxes and thick thermocol blocks take up an absurd amount of space in the balcony or loft (tand).
How long do you hoard appliance boxes for warranty, installation, or servicing reasons before finally giving them off to the kabadiwala?
4. Outgrown Kids' Clothes & The Toy Avalanche
For those of you with kids, how are you surviving the constant influx of clothes and toys? As kids age, they outgrow clothes rapidly, leaving behind stacks of barely-worn outfits that still look brand new.
Add to that the mountains of toys—many of which are missing pieces or partially broken—and it feels impossible to manage. Because I want to extract full value out of everything we buy, it pains me to toss them. Plus, the moment I try to throw away a half-broken toy, my kid acts like it’s their absolute favorite item.
How do you pass down or clear out outgrown kids' clothes efficiently?
How do you quietly purge broken toys without causing a meltdown, and what’s your strategy for rotating or donating working ones?
Would love to hear your rules, routines, or ruthless decluttering hacks for keeping an Indian household organized while keeping frugal guilt at bay!
