AITA For Accidentally Getting Someone Fired?
I (33F) work for a caregiving company that caters to the needs of mentally and physically disabled adults. I may have accidentally gotten someone fired today…
For context and background:
I worked for a company a few years ago, ran up the ranks, and ultimately had to quit due to personal reasons. After a long hiatus I have found myself back at the same company.
AITA:
I am working third shift at this job. The person who trained me the past few days failed to stay awake during our shift. They fell asleep. (Two nights in a row) Due to the nature of the people we care for, it is a terminable offense to fall asleep on the job as many of our individuals are high need/high risk. I remained awake and wasn’t planning on saying anything about it since we were both on shift. (Meaning I could care for them if they needed something)
Unfortunately… one of the clients woke up and came into the livingroom while my trainer was softly snoring and very clearly asleep. The client asked me if they were asleep and I obviously couldn’t lie to them. (Why lie? It’s pointless!) The client asked me to speak to management about it. So, I brought it up to my manager who had to escalate it to her manager. Both of them spoke to the client and myself about the incident. I very clearly stated I was not trying to get them in trouble or fired and was hoping for them to just have a correction. Nothing more.
I learned when I came to work this evening the person had been suspended until an investigation could be concluded. This person is having a major hardship at home and I feel really bad now. I was in their shoes back in 2024, my husband was dying. I know it was the right thing to do because it was probably happening when nobody else was there… but it doesn’t make me feel any better. Am I The Asshole for possibly (very likely!) getting them fired instead of keeping the information to myself? I understand policy is policy… but boy do I feel shitty.
