how to deal with feeling left out in new friend group
hi! i’m a sophomore at ucla who lowkey went all of freshman year without a solid friend group, kind of grown into being a ‘floater friend’ until i met a girl (we’ll call her leah) online i vibed with and we just kinda formed a friend group within week 0.
for context, we met 2 weeks before move in, leah was a true bruin ambassador there and met another friend (call her serena) who is a little more shy, and she brought her roommate, and then 2 of leah’s guy friends + my boyfriend joined.
i’m having a hard time because i’ve started to feel that she is liking serena a lot more and in group settings im usually the one hanging in the back or not getting responded to, not laughing at my jokes, people start pulling out their phones, and i find this really hard bc i know it’s not intentional since we kinda bonded over the fact that we both suffered through being left out and didn’t wanna do that again, but that kinda makes it hurt more bc they’re genuinely just forgetting about me.
i really like serena too but she just seems like she’s comfortable mainly talking w leah and talking w me only in like group settings (considering she’s more on the shy side)
i just don’t really know what to do because i do have anxiety about these things since i haven’t had genuine friends in a while but my boyfriend also said it seemed like “they only think or talk about us when we’re around but when we’re not around, they probably are not like thinking about us & it feels like they already have their own friend group and we’re just like tagging along”, so i feel unsure.
honestly it’s a little pathetic but i would take friends who leave me out over no friends on the hill, i had a rough first year and don’t want to deal with that again. so im really just looking for advice to make this feel better for me without being awkward about it. they literally made their own plans without me for tomorrow and i feel like im self inviting myself when they started talking about it. please help me :(((
