Local Guide: Tips & Safety Checklist for Setting Up Inflatables & Outdoor Parties in RVA
Hey Richmond! With party season in full swing, I wanted to share a quick checklist and safety guide for anyone planning an outdoor event, block party, or birthday party with bounce houses or inflatables around town.
1. Surface Setup & Anchorage
- Grass vs. Concrete: Grass is always ideal because standard 18-inch stakes can be used. If setting up on asphalt or concrete, make sure heavy sandbags or water weights (at least 50–100 lbs per anchor point) are used.
- Underground Utilities: If staking into the yard, always call 811 to mark gas/electric lines ahead of time!
2. Power Requirements
- Commercial blowers require a dedicated 15A or 20A circuit. Plugging multiple high-draw items (like a bounce house blower and a snow cone or popcorn machine) into the same outlet or a flimsy household extension cord will trip the breaker or cause an electrical hazard. Use a heavy-duty 12-gauge extension cord instead.
3. Wind & Weather Monitoring
- Inflatables should never be operated in winds exceeding 15–20 mph. Keep an eye on local wind gusts, and if a sudden summer storm rolls through, evacuate the unit and deflate it immediately.
4. Sanitation Checks
- If hiring a rental vendor, always ensure they sanitize their units between uses. A quick visual check inside for dry, clean surfaces and no lingering odors gives you peace of mind before kids jump in.
(Full disclosure: I run Jump Around Bounce House Rentals here in the area, so I work with these setups every weekend!)
Hope this helps anyone planning a gathering soon. Feel free to ask if you have any questions about local park permits, setup requirements, or power needs for your party!
