On This Day, September 23, 1980, the King of Reggae, Bob Marley, performed his final concert at the Stanley Theatre in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, during the Uprising Tour.

Just two days earlier, Marley had performed at Madison Square Garden in New York. After the Pittsburgh performance, the remaining dates of the U.S. tour were canceled as his health deteriorated.

Marley had been diagnosed with acral lentiginous melanoma, a rare form of skin cancer, after an injury to his toe in 1977. By 1980, the cancer had spread to other parts of his body.

Despite his worsening condition, Marley continued performing. His final concert included some of his most famous songs, including “No Woman, No Cry,” “Jamming,” “Exodus,” “Redemption Song,” “Could You Be Loved,” “Is This Love” and “Get Up, Stand Up.”

After the tour was canceled, Marley traveled to Germany for treatment at the clinic of Dr. Josef Issels.

His final studio album released during his lifetime, Uprising, had been released earlier in 1980. The album included “Could You Be Loved,” “Zion Train,” “Forever Loving Jah” and the iconic “Redemption Song.”

Bob Marley had already become an international symbol of music, peace, and unity.

In 1978, he received the United Nations Peace Medal of the Third World following his efforts to promote peace and reconciliation in Jamaica.

In 2001, twenty years after his death, Marley was posthumously awarded the GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution to recorded music.

Some of his most famous songs include “No Woman, No Cry,” “Redemption Song,” “Could You Be Loved,” “Get Up, Stand Up,” “Buffalo Soldier” and “Three Little Birds.”

Bob Marley was born on February 6, 1945, in Nine Mile, Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica.

He died on May 11, 1981, in Miami, Florida, at the age of 36, after his cancer had spread throughout his body.

His final concert took place on a September night in Pittsburgh.

He didn't know it would be his last time on stage.

And the music never stopped.
