Jaltest alternatives that actually work? Looking at ANCEL X7HD

Scan Tool

Mostly work on buses and trucks, sometimes vans and cars. Mixed brands, Mercedes, MAN, Volvo mainly. Currently on a Launch-based Android tool and coverage is hit and miss, some vehicles read fine, others no response at all, sometimes it can't even pull a VIN.

Jaltest looks like the best thing out there from everything I've read, but the price is way out of what I can spend right now. So I'm looking at cheaper stuff like the ANCEL X7HD, which claims a similar brand list for a fraction of the cost. Obviously I'm sceptical, the claims on those listings are always optimistic.

For anyone who's used both or moved from one to the other, does something like the X7HD actually get you close to what Jaltest does, or is it a different league once you're on real vehicles? Does it hold up on older models as well as newer ones? And can you get the readings and fault codes out of it as proper data, or is it screen only?
