Help me try to get into the show please

Let me start with I'm 6 episodes into the first season and I do plan on watching it all and I mean no hate what so ever I'm just finding it a little slow and I'm not invested in the characters.

The reason I loved game of thrones was it always had so much variety in houses and characters. Some plots bored me from start to end but others kept me watching. I also liked certain characters and their stories the most like the hound, Bronn and Jon Snow. The different settings of beyond the wall, the north in general and the deserts gave it variety.

I guess what I'm asking for is without spoilers does the show improve on my specific, peculiar tastes or is it a completely different show entirely?

I appreciate any input. Thank you.
