About the route to Batthal through the mountains by the check point rest town?

Where you go under the bridge at the check point rest town you eventually go through a cave leading to a large cliff in Batthal, I've done this twice now once in daylight, I couldn't see a way down off the cliff, so just tried to hop down the cliffs eventually fell and just used a wake stone and continued through Batthal as normal.

I went back trying to find the intended route down out of curiosity but I mistimed it and it was night time so couldn't see and just ended up using a wake stone again. That cave beforehand looks amazing at night by the way.

So is there an actual way down off of this cliff or are the developers intending for you to turn back or something? Seems like an intended route, rather than a gotcha.
