AITH for telling my sister her emotional support macaw can't come to my wedding after it ruined my engagement photos?
I'm 29, my sister is 34. She has a blue-and-gold macaw that she takes absolutely everywhere. And I mean everywhere. She brought it to our grandma's funeral. She brought it to a job interview. She brought it to my engagement dinner last year, where it screamed through the entire toast while my future mother-in-law sat there with a face like she'd swallowed a lemon.
The bird is not a trained service animal. She bought a little vest online and calls it her emotional support parrot. I've bitten my tongue for years because she swears it's the only thing that keeps her calm in social situations, and I do get that she struggles. I'm not heartless.
But then came the engagement photoshoot. She showed up uninvited with the bird on her shoulder. I didn't want a scene so I let her hang around in the background. Big mistake. The parrot bit my fiancé's ear hard enough to draw blood, then crapped all over my dress. The photographer got it all on camera. We had to pay $400 out of pocket for a reshoot.
So when I sent out wedding invitations last month, I wrote a note on hers. I said I'd love for her to be there, but the bird can't come to the ceremony or the reception. I offered to set up a quiet room where she could check on it in a carrier, but it can't be in the venue.
She called me sobbing. She said I'm ableist, that the bird is the only thing that gets her through social situations, and that banning it is basically banning her. She said she's been crying for two days and might not come at all.
My mom thinks I should just let it go because it's one day and family comes first. My fiancé says absolutely not his ear still has a scar.
Now half my family is texting me calling me cruel for excluding my own sister.
I feel like I'm losing my mind here. It's my wedding. I'm not banning her, I'm banning a bird that bit my fiancé and ruined photos I already paid for once.
AITH?
