Stop thinking you are "cooked" and abroad is better
I'm not living in Mauritius and never went but countries that I know are not the heaven Mauritians "expatriates" describe here.
France :
- ... I was born, grew up and still live in Seine-Saint-Denis (93 as they call us). I had to face multiple discrimination and racism at work. They believe we are all 'racailles', drug dealers, rapists, stupid people, that we fight for whatever occasion, that were all are radical muslims or radical evangelicals that hate Jews (in fact my département is one of them where they are the most Jews lol)
- housing costs are expensive and crazy in Paris, Hauts-de-Seine (département sans âme), Val-de-Marne and Seine-Saint-Denis (both were the public transportation reach us) ; it is really important as a lot of employers trash your application if you are not living at less that 40 minutes from your job (ah and a lot of them don't care about how many hours you are meant to work, unpaid overtime is common everywhere)
- I spoke of discriminations, I need to be more precise : you can be victim of it if you live in a poor suburb, if you are or feel like a gay, if you are a people of color, you are or look muslim, if you are young, if you dress sloghtly differently, if you have uncommon hobbies, if you a woman (France is not the feminist country we like to describe), if you are short (Mauritians men average 1m73, that is short for French people, but not that short as we average 1m77), if you look young (I have a juvenile face and people think I am dumb, if you have a 'american' name, a foreign name, if you are shy or introvert (as judging is a national sport in France, if you are calm - what Mauritians are known to be, they think you are judging them) etc...
- Youth unemployemment is at 21% one of the top 3 highest in Europe (out of 27 countries) as it is in Mauritius ; but in Mauritius, the overall uemployment rate is at 5,7% showing that things get a lot better, in France it is 8,3% (it gets better but not that much)
- we have the same rate of youth studying in tertiary institutions but it is because we allowed a lot of private, low quality, with poor outcome, institutions (and of course, these are really expensive) ; of course they take advantage of the naivety of foreingners, banlieusards and campagnards,
- between 10% to 25% of our youth that studied in our Grandes Écoles go abroad, as in Mauritius ... Though only 40% our youths will effectively graduate (less than Mauritian Youth), so less young people leave overall but it is because we are dumber and we suck in English
- the criminality in France is, depending on the type, higher : there are less feminicides in France per 100 000 inhabitants but far more people that could pickpocket you, beat you for no reason (a lot of it due to the fact that being drunk or high outside is pretty common here), YOU HAD THE GOVERNMENT THAT CENSORED REPORT OF SEXUAL ABUSE in the prívate schools, and sexual abuses in private or "Grandes" Écoles are common ; and of course, we have a lot of violences policières (you dismantle the Special Striking Team, down here we have politicians that wants to award these behaviors)
- HOUSING MARKET is trash here... Believe me, in Saint-Denis, a city labelled as hell on earth (it isn't), the newer programs are expensive (200k€ for 35 m²) and it is among the less expensive in zones with easy access to jobs... Though the Village Olympique is beautiful ; the town where I live now faces housing rents so high that my parents couldn't afford it with their wages while they could 15 years ago ; MAURITIUS HAS A OWNERSHIP RATE OF 88%, 61% IN FRANCE, there is a reason ; ah and if you think Mauritians are harsh about ZEP and social housing, you will never believe what 30% to 50% of French do say about people living there...
- you like to complain about what you perceive as corruption, that's fair enough, you are right about being though on this, but Singapore - the so called example - is a hot spot of international dirty money (they externalised the corruption) and France (the UK, the US, Germany) is among the top 5 of countries where money is the most laundered ; according to Roberto Saviano southeast of France is now a hot spot of mafia dealings and activities ; our government hided that some water bottled by a company was toxic, we let farmers use too much inputs, we have a lot of local politicians making dirt dealings with X communities, X organisation or X company, our government is deeply intricated with some big companies, we have our Justice Minister who is accused of dirt sexual abuse, and overall Macron government exploded the number ministers accused of X or Y... Why are we better rated that Mauritius ? 1st Mauritians experts are more severe - but polls commissioned by Transparency International show that Mauritians face or witness the same amount of corruption as French, British people - and 2nd because we have better institutions to officially fight corruption, but effectively they are mostly useless as our Finance minister can stop some cases (several examples of Big companies that made favorable deals) and because our judiciary system is slow (example : Sarkozy was sentences after more than 10 years of procedure, the same for Marine Le Pen, Sarkozy tried to corrupt a judge, and he spent only 3 months in prison 😁...)
Your wages are low when we convert them but is because your currency is weaker.
For example : the Mauritius gdp per capital is at 13k$, but if we adjust to take into account thé purchasing power, it 35k$.
I see you complain about Mauritius being less of a manufaturing hug... That's normal, more a country become richer, the less it has as manufaturing rests a lot on low prices so low wages.
But your government is pushing fast to transition to low carbon energy. You will reduce a lot of your trade deficit thanks to it.
Finally, I'm not saying that you cannot have a good experience abroad. I just mean that Mauritius isn't doing that badly... In fact the Betterlman Transformation Index rates Mauritius 7,2/10 on gouvernance... And decided to put a malus that lowered it to 6,3. Why ? They consider that the basic services are so much common and good, that Mauritians are so well educated that it is too easy for its government 🫠🫠🫠
It is not, Mauritius is remote, is a tiny country, where imports cannot be cheap and exports not only are difficulted because of the small population but also because of the structural high logistical costs. Unfortunately, you cannot do nothing about it !
That's why the services industries are so important to your country. Stop dreaming about becoming Singapore. Singapore never was that poor country... At its independence it was already a major hub. And Singapore it placed on the biggest trade route of... History. I'm not joking. They also have neighbours that are far more populated and use Singapore to export their production and as a financial hub.
When I studied Economics, Mauritius was often pick as an example of good development policy.
I don't mean that everything is good. But Mauritius is not hell on earth. And of course, if you dream to travel in a lot of countries, of a country with a lot of socially progressive policie, yes you should leave Mauritius. But do not forget : Marine le Pen + Reconquête + Debout la France + Bruno Retailleau make 40% of the votes in France, one of the most progressive countries on Earth, and Eastern Europe is a lot more conservative... Than Mauritius.
