How do you actually know if you should play Regular or Full Right?

I know this question has been asked hundreds of times, but I still can’t figure out what actually makes the most sense for me.

For context, I started playing hockey about two years ago, I’m around 32, and I only started playing goalie about eight months ago. I started with a used Full Right setup, so Full Right wasn’t really a deliberate choice based on what felt most natural.

I’m left-handed in everyday life, but I shoot right-handed when I play as a skater.

As a goalie, I currently play Full Right, so I have my stick/blocker in my left hand and my catcher in my right hand.

The problem is that I keep feeling like I would probably be much better at catching with my left hand. It just feels like my left hand has much better coordination.

And regarding the usual “which hand would you throw or catch a ball with?” question: for me, the answer is basically left for both.

If I had to throw a ball, I would 100% use my left hand. Throwing with my right hand would be terrible.

For catching, my left hand also feels much more natural. I can catch with my right hand reasonably well — definitely much better than I could throw with it — but my left still feels clearly better for both throwing and catching.

That’s what makes this confusing.

If I switch to Regular, I would get the catcher in my dominant left hand, which sounds much more natural. But then I would have to hold/control the goalie stick with my right hand, and I’m worried that would feel much worse.

So I’m kind of stuck between:

  • Full Right: stick feels natural in my left hand, catcher is in my less coordinated right hand.
  • Regular: catcher would probably feel much better in my left hand, but the stick would be in my weaker right hand.

I’m asking because I might buy a new goalie setup soon, and I really don’t want to invest in another Full Right setup if Regular would actually fit me better long term.

I actually tried a Regular setup once, just for one game, to see how it felt.

The problem is that my goalie level is still pretty bad overall, so over just one game I honestly couldn’t tell much of a difference. My performance was more or less the same with Regular as it usually is with Full Right.

So that one test didn’t really help me figure out which side is actually more natural for me long term.

Thanks ! :)
