Phone stolen on my way to college feeling guilty and terrible about it.
Yesterday morning, I had my phone stolen while travelling to college, and honestly, the whole experience has been really upsetting.
I was at the Nigdi bus stop around 7:50 AM, talking to a friend on a call while waiting for the bus. The call ended, and I put my phone in my left pants pocket.
The bus arrived about a minute later, and there was a lot of crowding because everyone was trying to get in quickly and grab a seat. I managed to get a seat. After sitting down, I put on my earphones to listen to music, as I normally do.
When I put my hand into my pocket to take out my phone, I suddenly realized it wasn't there.
I immediately checked around my seat, underneath the seat, and near the door. I also asked my friend to call my number. The phone was still ringing, but we couldn't hear it anywhere inside the bus.
At the next stop, my friend and I got off and went back to the previous stop to check if the phone had fallen somewhere or if someone had found it. We searched around for about 15 minutes, but then the phone was switched off.
That's when we realized it had most likely been stolen.
I called my brother, he came there, and we went directly to the police station and registered a complaint. There is a CCTV camera near the bus door, and we have requested the footage to see whether anything can be identified.
I eventually came home in the afternoon, but I've been feeling extremely guilty and upset since then. The phone cost around ₹25,000, and it was bought with my father's hard-earned money. What hurts the most is that I don't even know when the person took it from my pocket. I've kept thinking about it again and again—whether I should have noticed something, whether I could have prevented it, etc.
My family hasn't blamed me at all. They actually told me, "Whatever is meant to happen happens. You can't stop everything, so don't worry too much." Hearing that honestly made me even more emotional, and I ended up crying.
On top of that, I checked the current prices of phones, and prices have increased quite a bit. The kind of phone I bought for ₹25,000 would now cost significantly more to replace, which makes the situation feel even worse.
If anyone was travelling on the 305 bus from/around Nigdi at approximately 7:50 AM yesterday, or noticed anything suspicious around the bus entrance, I'd really appreciate any information.
I'm also wondering if anyone here has dealt with a similar phone theft on a PMPML bus. Is there anything else I should do apart from the police complaint and trying to obtain the CCTV footage?
Any advice would be appreciated.
