My former friends threw away/divided up $1,000+ of my belongings. Should I pursue this legally, or let it go and move on?
Location: Tennessee
I’m dealing with something that has honestly been making me feel really sick and upset, and I’m not sure what the right thing to do is.
I used to live with some people who were my friends. When I left, I had to leave some of my belongings at their house. We verbally discussed that my things would be safe there, so I trusted them and left them.
I know I should have gotten my stuff sooner. A year ended up passing, and I recently reached out because I wanted to get everything back. (A Gucci bag was one of the items)
One of the former roommates told me that my belongings had been divided among the people who lived there. Another told me that some of my belongings had been thrown away.
I never gave anyone permission to take, divide, keep, sell, or throw away my things.
I made it clear I was upset and I got laughed at and basically bullied in the group chat until I had to leave it.
I was shocked because I never saw that side of them at all.
I estimate that I had $1,000+ worth of belongings there, and some of it was sentimental and can’t really be replaced with money.
So I’m not just upset about the financial loss. I’m grieving the loss of things that had memories attached to them, and I’m also grieving these friendships. These were people I genuinely considered my friends, and now I don’t feel like I can trust them anymore.
I don’t have much money, so hiring a lawyer isn’t really an option for me. This happened in Tennessee, and I’m trying to figure out whether pursuing this legally would actually be worthwhile or whether I should just accept the loss and move forward.
I’m also struggling with the emotional side of this. Part of me thinks, “It’s just stuff,” but another part of me feels violated and betrayed.
Losing $1,000+ worth of things is a lot to me, and losing sentimental items and friendships at the same time makes it harder.
I know this is just a place for legal stuff but if you ever went through something similar can you please tell me the icky feeling gets better or how to think of it in a way that I would feel better about it?
