The movie exists to hold the rights, but it was a step in the right direction
Honestly no matter what you thought of the new zach cregger RE movie, it just proves the same thing fans have been saying for decades. constantin film needs to lose the rights if they don't put proper care into it. The film was great, I just wish I didn't feel like it could exist outside of the Resident Evil universe.
They just slap the RE logo on some random horror script, drop a few character names, and call it a day. it literally proves this is just a quick IP holding strategy.. they don't care about making a real resident evil movie, they just need to make something every few years so the contract doesn't expire and go back to capcom.
that’s why live action RE has been such a mess for 20+ years
if constantin’s deal finally died and capcom got the rights back, capcom could actually shop the IP around to studios who care about the source material. we could literally get a tight, low-budget, super creepy Spencer Mansion movie that actually respects the lore, or a standalone horror series based on 7 or Outbreak. instead, we’re stuck with constantin throwing random non-RE movies at the wall just to hold the rights hostage.
It sucks how constantin films had to make a movie that could exist without the RE IP to make a good RE movie. Yes, hardcore fans are bitching, but as a reasonable hardcore fan myself, I do see the point they're failing to make
