Late discovery at 41: An AI conversation helped me connect my ADHD to Autistic traits (AuDHD). Does this resonate with anyone?

Question

Hi everyone. I’m a 41-year-old guy from Chile. I’ve been lurking in this subreddit for a while. I always related to some of the stories here, but not all of them, so I always kept my distance from the Autism label.

A while ago, a psychiatrist diagnosed me with ADHD. But lately, I’ve been feeling like ADHD alone doesn't explain the full picture of my struggles. Today, I had a very deep, analytical conversation with an AI about my life, my constant executive dysfunction, and my emotional burnout. The AI pointed out that my experiences perfectly align with an AuDHD (Autism + ADHD) 2e (Twice-Exceptional) profile, combined with CPTSD from years of masking.

Reading that felt like a ton of bricks hitting me, but in a good way. Suddenly, my whole life made sense.

Here are the traits we discussed that made it click:

The "Gifted" Masking (2e): I breezed through high school without studying and got top scores on national tests just by using logic and raw processing speed. Because I was "smart," no one noticed I lacked executive function. In adulthood, running a business, I completely collapsed. I can design complex software systems, but basic administrative tasks or following up on invoices completely paralyze me.

Sensory Overload & Physical Pain: Loud noises, especially people shouting, cause me literal physical pain (my stomach tightens, my heart races, and I feel dizzy). I realized I’ve been using cannabis for years not recreationally, but as an "emergency off-switch" to numb my nervous system from sensory and emotional overload.

Severe RSD (Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria) & Conflict Avoidance: I will literally lose thousands of dollars in my business just to avoid a confrontational phone call. When I have to talk about deep feelings, I either want to cry uncontrollably or I go completely flat, using "pre-recorded scripts" in my head to avoid breaking down.

Hyperfocus in Motion: I can't think straight sitting at a desk. I have to walk (often at a specific pace, like 110 steps/min) to process complex information, regulate my stress, and feel normal.

Family History: Looking back, it's so obvious. I had a non-verbal autistic great-uncle who was hidden away in the countryside due to ignorance. My dad has an extreme encyclopedic memory (remembers scientific names of plants from 60 years ago), and my mom is pure hyperactive ADHD.

I know an AI isn't a doctor, and I plan to seek a proper professional evaluation, but for the first time in 41 years, I feel a strange sense of peace. I don't feel like a "lazy failure" anymore; I feel like a neurodivergent guy who has been trying to operate a complex brain without the manual.

I’m sharing this because I want to be a better dad to my 12-year-old son, who I strongly suspect shares my brain wiring. I don't want him to grow up feeling broken like I did.

Has anyone else experienced this kind of late-in-life realization? Does this combination of sensory overload, gifted kid burnout, and ADHD masking the Autism traits sound like your AuDHD experience? I would love to hear your thoughts.

TL;DR: 41M diagnosed with ADHD had a deep chat with an AI that connected the dots to AuDHD (sensory overload, RSD, 2e/gifted masking, family history). Seeking thoughts and shared experiences from the community.
