Is "The Great Theft: Wrestling Islam from the Extremists" a good text to learn about Islam as a non-Muslim? Or, what are some other good texts?
I've posted here before asking a question about Islam. TLDR my partner is Muslim and I want to learn more about the faith.
Someone here saw my post and reached out with a text discussing Islam. Namely, Kitab al Tawheed: the Basis of Islam and the Reality of Monotheism. I really did appreciate the gesture. However, I did not like the text much. The author said some things that read to me as weird:
- Implied that Muslims are incompatible with Western society.
- Claimed no society has or will ever rise from Christianity or any other religion (as opposed to Islam).
- Referred to the West as having "so-called 'humane' or 'humanitarian'" policies that Islamic society should avoid, which I can only assume is what, equality and equal rights?
I digress. I unfortunately have a bias against religion. I didn't like the role it played in my formative years, and I still don't love the way it is sometimes used today (like, when Christians justify homophobia with the Bible). But I want to learn about Islam for my sake and my partner's. I tried reading the Quran a bit, but the Quran is obviously interpreted in so many ways. I'd personally rather read someone's analysis and interpretation of Islam written in contemporary prose.
ALL THAT TO SAY, does anyone have any text suggestions that might suit what I'm looking for? ChatGPT suggested the one in my title but idk if there's better options out there.
