Photos not being saved?

Whatsapp starting acting weird on me. I like to delete chats that are "done" but I noticed that it is also deleting photos that are from the chat. I have it set that media should automatically download but once I delete the chat the media gets deleted too? I have to manually access the pic and download it to have it save. I've searched around for some fixes and none of them work.
