What Tamil Cinema Needs Now

💢 Rant | குமுறல்

Tamil cinema needs to move beyond excessive woke and liberal messaging and return to what cinema does best—strong storytelling, compelling characters, meaningful themes, and genuine entertainment.
Liberal and left-leaning filmmakers also need more nuance in the way they approach social issues. When ideas are presented in an extreme or one-sided manner, they can create the opposite reaction and push people further toward the other side.
There are also real social issues in Tamil Nadu that deserve deeper and more honest discussion. For example, many young men feel that finding a suitable marriage partner has become increasingly difficult, with changing expectations around income, career, lifestyle, family, and gender roles. Instead of simply blaming men or women, cinema can explore **why these expectations have changed, what social and economic factors are behind them, and how both sides can adapt**.
This is where progressive cinema can genuinely make a difference. Directors should first understand society in all its complexity, then use entertainment to make people question outdated beliefs, examine new social realities, and think about possible solutions.
**Cinema doesn't have to preach. Tell a great story, show the reality, make people think—and let society have the conversation.**
