Catcher Development - Pitch Calling
Question for parents/coaches who have experience with catchers.
How important is it for middle school catchers to learn how to call a game?
My kid’s travel program doesn’t teach catchers to call pitches. The coaches handle everything from the dugout because they believe that’s what players will see at higher levels anyway. I can understand that, but it seems like learning pitch selection, sequencing, reading swings, etc. would still be an important part of developing as a catcher.
It also brings up a bigger question. How much should parents trust a travel program’s development philosophy, and when is it reasonable to question whether a win-now approach is leaving out skills that might matter later?
Curious what others have experienced, especially with older catchers.
