Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat, making his first public comments on the proposed purchase of the city’s 1,300-bed detention center, said the deal will help the county with a legal agreement to improve conditions at the decrepit Rice Street jail.

But with the county’s jail still working to remedy those dangerous conditions, and the sheriff’s office struggling with a staffing shortage, **some question whether acquiring the building would do anything to address the root of the problems** — which must be addressed under a legal agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice known as a consent decree.

**COMMENTS FROM THE STREET:**

"The over-crowding issue at the jail went unaddressed too long.

The over-crowding started reaching critical levels when that **YSL tria**l started. That trial dragged on too long and caused so many problems. The length of the witness list was beyond ridiculous and the prosecutors from Fani Willis' office were unorganized and unprepared, and that added extra time to the trial.

Defense attorneys couldn't represent their other clients while the YSL trial was going on, so those clients had to sit in jail.

Other prosecution cases also went on the back burner during the YSL trial. Families were going to local news outlets to complain about it, because justice was being delayed for loved ones. And the funds that were designated to clear up those backlog cases, were being used for Donald Trump's Election Interference case.

And **Sheriff Pat Labat** lost credibility due to his mismanaging his budget, and aligning himself with Fani Willis.
