AITA for telling my friend I cannot keep hearing about her renovation plans when she has been actively renovating for two years and has no end date in sight
My friend Petra bought a fixer upper about two years ago which was genuinely exciting at the time. She has been renovating it herself with occasional help from contractors and the project has become basically her entire personality since she moved in.
I want to be clear that I think what she is doing is impressive and I was supportive for a long time. The first year I listened to every update, looked at every photo, gave opinions on tile samples and paint swatches and cabinet hardware. I was genuinely interested.
But two years in the conversations have not changed at all. Every single time we meet up, every phone call, every message, it circles back to the renovation within about four minutes. The kitchen delay, the contractor who let her down, the new bathroom layout, the flooring decision she cannot make. It is relentless and identical to conversations we were having eighteen months ago.
Last month I met up with Petra for coffee and she spent the first forty minutes talking about a ceiling light fitting situation before I had said more than a few sentences about my own life.
I finally said something. I told her I cared about her and wanted to support her but that I was finding it genuinely hard to connect with her lately because every conversation revolved entirely around the house and I missed actually talking to her as a person.
She went quiet and then said she was sorry I felt that way but that the renovation was her life right now and she needed people around her who could support that.
We have not spoken properly since.
AITA?
