I ordered a Forged Front Carrier Block for my new G-Line (just completed a 5-day, 250-mile tour around the Tatra Mountians in Slovakia and loved it!), and decided I could replace the front carrier block myself. I’m a bike mechanic and the instructions seemed straightforward.

I removed the latch to expose the 2 bolts. Using a hex wrench by hand I firmly and slowly loosened the bolts. There was some resistance but they did begin to turn. Then they just kept turning, with backing off.

After some quick research I learned I’m not the first to experience this. The threadlock on the bolts is stronger than the rivnuts (they don’t used braze-on threaded bosses) - causing the rivnut to release and spin in place.

So I removed the headset to access the backside of the rivnut, clamped them with pliers and was able to unscrew the bolts. However, the rivnuts were still loose and had developed a slight amount of play in them. Thinking it wouldn’t be wise to mount the new carrier block to the loose rivnuts I ground down the rivnut shoulders so I could remove them entirely.

Tomorrow I’ll install rivnuts, possibly with some washers or a backing plate g plate to add some strength.

Any other recommendations or ideas? Should I have taken to a shop (in rural Scotland so none around)? Frame warranty?
