Pushing back against irredeemable mobster morality (it’s dicked up)

It’s been discussed that even characters that display a solid moral compass (such as Bobby) are irredeemable and hopelessly depraved because of their willingness to participate in the mob. Putting aside the fact that many of the characters are socialized into a life of violence and indoctrinated with a mafia mythology, I just don’t think that’s a good argument to write off the moral sense of characters like Bobby and others. It lacks nuance and is a naive position that only shows that those that support this argument of unwavering degeneracy are biased to overlook the evils we’ve normalized.

Take oil extraction, pharmaceuticals, and finance for example, all of which are objectively horrifically more violent and destructive than anything the mob could do. The only difference is that your everyday office clerks and account managers of said industries are able to maintain a comfortable enough administrative distance to keep them from directly witnessing the harm their work causes. Even with computers, supply-chain and financial abstractions are more than technical problems to solve, they have direct human consequences.

Anyways, I feel like AJ would make this kind of quibbling ethical post. Let me know if you guys think relatively morally upstanding characters like Bobby (except for that one murder, which was carried out under duress) are forever tainted by their work, or if there really isn’t room for morals and dignity in this economy.

Not saying that pretty much everyone else in the Mob in the show isn’t a soulless sociopath. I just don’t think Bobby should be thrown into the bucket of being irredeemable because of his participating in this thing of ours. Too black and white for me.
