I personally don’t think it should be. When talking about the Cleveland Browns moving to Baltimore to become the Ravens, Jon Bois said “History is a collection of objective facts, not a chain of grocery stores. It can't simply be acquired and rebranded.”

That was in regard to football, but I think that opinion still stands in Hockey. When the Atlanta Flames moved to Calgary, they kept their short history when they moved. The Kansas City Scouts moved twice, to Colorado to become the Rockies and then to New Jersey to become the Devils, and Colorado and KC’s histories, as disappointing as their were, are apart of the Devils’ team history. And when the Avalanche moved from Quebec, they did not and still haven’t been given the historical stats or team records from the Rockies.

Even the Minnesota North Stars history hasn’t been given to the Wild despite that their reasons for moving are similar. The original Minnesota and Winnipeg teams moved because they wanted better financial conditions and they couldn’t build a new arena.

I also personally feel that Utah’s history is a more drawn-out version of New Jersey’s history, with two moves and financial pressures being the reasons for moving both times, so didn’t they simplify it by giving Utah the Coyotes’ history and the original Jets’ history. If you do that with Dallas, New Jersey, Calgary and used to do it with Winnipeg, why not just recognize Utah’s past history since Meruelo relinquished the franchise and IP rights in 2024.

I don’t know if there’s a distinct difference with any of those cases or it’s to recognize past team’s history like with the Maple Leafs’ history as the Arenas and St. Pats but it just seems weird to me, especially since they don’t do that last part with the old and the new Ottawa Senators franchises being two different teams.

I’m happy for the Jets old history getting combined with the new history, but…
