Advice for selling premium products in a commodity-driven market

Hey everyone,

I work in B2B sales in the agricultural sector, specifically selling fertilizers. It's a fairly commodity-driven market where many customers tend to compare products primarily on price, even when the products differ in terms of quality, performance, and technical value.

My challenge is selling mid-to-high-end products in a market where cheaper alternatives are readily available and price is often the main factor driving purchasing decisions.

I'd love to hear from people who have experience selling premium products in highly price-sensitive, traditional industries.

A few questions:

- How do you differentiate your offering when customers perceive competing products as essentially interchangeable?

- How do you justify a price premium without relying solely on product features or technical specifications?

- What sales strategies have worked best for shifting the conversation from price per unit to overall value, ROI, or total cost of ownership?

- How do you handle customers who acknowledge the quality difference but still choose the cheaper alternative?

- Would you focus more on consultative selling, relationship-building, prospecting, or developing a strong niche within the market?

I'm particularly interested in practical, field-tested advice rather than generic sales tips.

If you've worked in industries such as chemicals, industrial supplies, construction materials, agricultural inputs, or other commodity-like B2B markets, I'd love to hear about your experience.

What has actually helped you win deals and consistently sell at a premium?

Thanks!
