Up a flight of stairs with 49 kilos of Rep Fitness AB 3000 adjustable bench
Getting the Rep Fitness AB 3000 up a flight of stairs is a two person job and I will start there, because 49.44 kilograms of steel does not go anywhere on its own. Two weeks in now, used most mornings. It is their FID adjustable bench, rated to 1000 pounds, 55.6 inches long and 25.8 wide, and it costs roughly three times what a Flybird does, which puts it in commercial territory rather than the budget end.
Assembly was straightforward, maybe 25 minutes, everything labelled and the instructions actualy usable. Bolts went in without any hole chasing, which after a few cheap benches I no longer take for granted. The box was a monster and getting the packaging off took nearly as long as bolting the thing together, which is my usual complaint with anything this size.
Solid is the word everyone uses and it is accurate. The ladder gives 7 positions from 85 degrees down to negative 20, the adjustment is smooth, and there is no play anywhere once a pin is seated. Pressing heavy on it feels like pressing in a gym, not on a folding frame that flexes when you drive your feet.
Padding is where opinions differ. The 2.5 inch pad wrapped in textured vinyl is firm, deliberately so, and it is wide enough that broader people do not feel like they are rolling off the sides. Some owners have asked Rep directly for extra padding before ordering, which tells you the standard pad is on the hard side. My shoulders are fine with it, my other half is not.
Think hard about the weight before you buy. It is not moving between rooms, the gap under the frame is small, and in a condo where footsteps carry, dragging this across a floor is not something you do casually. The upside is that it never shifts mid set, ever, and the wide flat feet spread the load rather than digging four points into the floor. Rubber on the contact points keeps it quiet as well, which in a building where the neighbours hear a dropped shoe is worth as much as the stability.
4.8 stars from 1000 reviews is unusually high, with 500 sold last month and #9 in the adjustable benches rank, and the pattern in the feedback is people saying it matches benches costing twice as much. Is the 2.5 inch pad still firm a year in, or does it dish where your shoulders sit and start needing a towel under it?
