Just started as a GET at a large MNC — what should my career path look like?
I’m 22, a Mechanical Engineering graduate, and I’ve recently joined one of the largest MNCs in the automotive/manufacturing sector as a Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET).
Since I’m just starting my career, I’m trying to figure out what direction I should build towards in the long term.
The main dilemma I have is:
Should I stay in the core engineering/manufacturing domain and build deep technical expertise, or should I gradually move towards management/business-oriented roles?
I’m open to both options and don’t have a fixed preference yet. I want to understand which path generally provides better opportunities for career growth, compensation, flexibility, and leadership opportunities over the long term.
For people who have experience in either path:
- How would you compare staying in core engineering vs moving into management?
- How early should someone make this decision?
- Is it better to build strong technical experience first and then move into management?
- How useful would an MBA be if I eventually choose the management route?
- What would you do if you were starting at 22 as a GET at a large MNC?
I’d really appreciate hearing about your actual career journeys, mistakes, and what you would do differently.
I’m looking for guidance on what an ideal long-term path could look like from my current position.
