Better way to connect a bucket of drives than a j-bod?
So being an old it person I have just a ridiculous number of 1 TB SATA drives in the closet. I was thinking I would get a batch of these together to expand my Nas because I hate letting perfectly good hardware sit around unused.
My first thought my default thought every time it comes to connecting more than say six drives at a time is always rack mounted jbod. But I realize that's a fairly old solution for this kind of thing.
So discussion topic time. What are you all using for large numbers of drives these days?
I know it's become far preferable for larger capacity and smaller number of drives but there are still cases where having 24+ spinners is just what you have.
I've seen a few setups where people would use micro ITX boards and a SATA RAID card and 3D print a tower for the hard drives, again a power supply with the sufficient number of SATA cables and maybe a couple of extensions to add more power connectors, then put a stack of case fans along the side of the tower to keep them all in good temp range.
Hell I've personally done some shenanigans where I took the hard drive caddies out of old beat up cases (where it was a removable cage like in old Dell dimensions) and tack welded a stack of them together side by side and custom fit a couple of rails made of thin steel bars I found in a yardsale so that I could shove it into a rack and then created a homemade nas with a SATA raid controller connected through an adapter to the ngff slot in an old mini PC board and powered the whole mess off a modular PSU I zip tie cable managed and screwed backwards into a couple holes I drilled on the back of the hdd cage, that abomination got the job done for years.
So tell me, what are you go to solutions for jbod alternatives, or better yet what are your shameful abominations forged on your lab bench and unleashed on the world?
If anybody shares something more interesting than my hideous welding mess run by a floppy with naslite and more than a little duct tape, maybe that's what I'll do with these drives!
It would certainly be a lot more interesting than just throwing yet another old motherboard into a full tower case with eight bays and shoving drives into it. Well, considering how many drives I want to put together that would probably take a lot more of these boards and cases.
