AITA for throwing out my roommates food?
So I (31m) recently moved into a new place with a new roommate (40m). We moved to a new city without jobs and a couple bucks saved up to last us a few months. I am an online coach and have other avenues of making money so I’ve been keeping busy. My roommate fell into a bit of a depression and hasn’t been keeping up with cleaning which I recognized and have picked up the slack. I don’t mind that as we’ve all had our rough spots in life. recently he got an opportunity to travel for a week of work making some good money. They called him Saturday and he had to leave Sunday.
He obviously didn’t realize he was going to be gone for a week so he meal prepped a couple days before he got the call. Pasta, pasta sauce and some meat. Now he does have the habit of opening the meat package and using half and putting it back in the fridge to cook the next day or even later that day. He did it this time with about 2 pounds of uncooked meat.
So fast forward to today. I was looking at the house and decided I needed to do a deep clean as it was starting to look a bit gross. Went out bought a vacuum and cleaned everything except his bedroom and bathroom. I was going through the fridge and saw all this food. The meat was completely dried up and the pasta sauce which was uncovered looked bad too. Same with the pasta itself. I threw it out because it all looked heinous and figured he’d be grateful I cleaned and helped him out.
I picked him up from the airport today and when he saw his food was gone he got pissed and eventually sent me a long text about how it’s up to him to decide whether the food has gone bad or not. The meat was unsalvageable. And the pasta and sauce having been uncovered looked bad too. My thought process being I didn’t want opened containers of bad food in the fridge with unspoiled food. His being that today once I realized it looked bad that I should’ve covered it and let him decide later. I’m genuinely looking for what y’all think about this because I’ve been doing all the cleaning and it’s difficult for me to see his side in any way at this point.
