Have you considered Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies?
A common challenge with interdisciplinary grad programs is that students end up feeling isolated. No real cohort, no shared academic culture. Just a loosely defined mandate to "work across disciplines" with very little infrastructure to support it. At UBC's Okanagan campus, we wanted to do things differently.
Between 2017 and 2019, the Interdisciplinary Graduate Studies program was reorganized around what we call 'themes' — defined areas of interdisciplinary study, each with its own faculty and course offerings, but connected to each other through shared programming and a centralized structure.
The result is a program where you can do genuinely cross-disciplinary work and still have people around you who understand what you're doing. Theme coordinators actively work to build connections across themes, not just within them, so the community is broader than just your immediate cohort.
The themes at UBC Okanagan include:
- Digital Arts & Humanities
- Community Engagement, Social Change, Equity
- Global Studies
- Indigenous Knowledges
- Power, Conflict, and Ideas
- Sustainability
