Why should I care about suffering in future incarnations?"

Question

Many times I've read statements by Buddhists that people doing evil (including the worst criminals) do it out of ignorance. That if they had the insight that the law of karma will make them suffer in future incarnations, they wouldn't do it, because the long-term consequence is precisely great suffering

Meanwhile, I wonder: why should I even care about this? Since there is no permanent self (anatta instead of, say, the Hindu atman), and I remember neither my past nor my future incarnation, what motivation is it for me to avoid suffering in a future where, according to what I understand, it won't be me who suffers?
