I've been working on a personal project: a native Mac port of the original Crash Bandicoot (NTSC-U), with my own mods built on top. It's still very much a work in progress, but I wanted to share where it's at!

It's not an emulator: the game's original code was translated to run natively on the Mac, so the game logic is 100% the original. It runs from my own copy of the game.

Every mod is a crate I can switch on or off in the launcher:

* **Stormy Ascent**: is now a real part of the game. It has its own red pad on the map between Jaws of Darkness and Castle Machinery, its own gem, its Cortex tokens and bonus round, and it counts toward your completion. Notice how the load screen now says **33 levels** (1:51).



* **Analog Stick**: Crash moves in any direction, not just the 8 D-pad ones, and the stick controls his speed: a light push slow run animation, a full push full run animation.



* **True 60FPS**: the game itself runs at 60 fps, no interpolation. Crash 1 was built around 30 fps, so this took a LOT of iterations: moving platforms that made Crash slide off, the Stormy Ascent lift that refused to move, stone wheels and crabs at half speed, lab assistants throwing double potions, squashed crabs staying flat twice as long... all fixed one by one.



* **Forgiving Gems**: dying no longer costs you the box gem. Crates you broke before your last checkpoint stay broken, and a box counter joins the HUD. Colored gems keep the original no-death rule.



* **Save Anywhere**: press Triangle on the island map to save any time.



* **Fast Load**: loading screens finish in a blink.



* **True 16:9**: real widescreen drawn by the game's own engine, not stretched.



* **Steady Hands**: no more PS1 polygon wobble or warping textures.



* **True Colour**: full color precision, no dither grain or banding.



* **True Sound**: clearer music and a cleaner echo in caves and temples .



* **Clear View**: up to 4K rendering, a CRT filter, and a new DISPLAY option on the title menu 



Still WIP, so there's plenty left to polish.

My WIP native Mac port of Crash Bandicoot 1 with my own mods: real 60 FPS, analog movement, and Stormy Ascent is finally part of the game (33 levels)
